- EP Motivating
Force:
- The last 4 years at Tufts I
was looking for another career. I had an opportunity to start
my own business and decided to base it from home for financial
reasons. It was only later that I realized what a wonderful opportunity
this was for my family. While I miss the social benefits of being
an employee (and the steady paycheck, benefits, vacations, paid
holidays, etc....), I hope I don't have to return to the traditional
workforce.
-
- EP Musings:
- My son joined me in my booth
at a Baby Fair consumer show, and commenced selling "Boo
Buster" to everyone who walked by. It is a scented spray
that "chases monsters and goblins away at night so kids
can sleep." He is a convert. He earnestly explained to his
"customers" how the active ingredients -- monstericide
and globinase -- work, and assured every parent that their kids
would sleep better if they used "Boo Buster." Parents
of babies were advised that when their babies got big like him
(all of 4 years old) they would need "Boo Buster" too,
but they shouldn't buy it yet because other big kids needed
it now -- the older kids should wait and share...
-
- EP Schedule:
- I love the flexibility. I may
work more than I did as an employee, but I can adjust my hours
so that I can volunteer in the classroom, attend functions or
take a beautiful afternoon off to go to the beach. (Of course,
I can also work until three in the morning...) On most days,
my husband and I rise together, feed breakfast to our son, cat,
dog and fish. After driving our son to school, we'll then eat
our own breakfast and proceed to our respective home offices.
We meet for lunch and then break to pick up our son from school
at 3:00. Our son often joins one of us "at work" for
another 1-2 hours, and then we break for family time, which is
5:00 - 8:00 p.m. After our son goes to bed, my husband and I
often return to work for another 2-6 hours, depending on our
workload.
-
- EP Goals:
-
- In 2002 I will:
- concentrate
on licensing my product (attachable blanket for a person in a
seat, seen here for babies) to an established manufacturer of
adult/assisted living products.
- expand my Internet/mail
order shop.
- launch expanded
PR campaign.
- increase brand
awareness.
EP Advice: Don't answer your home phone while you're
working. Also, join and attend monthly meetings for one business
group and one personal itnerest/civic group. You need to get
out of the house and see some grown-ups who don't know you as
"Sally's Mommy" or "Jacob's Daddy."
