How I Simplified
My Life as an EP
I am a 35 year old married mother of two young children,
ages 4 and 6. I also own and publish a monthly newspaper in our
community for parents. Needless to say, between trying to juggle
the pressures of family life, and a demanding deadline and press
schedule -- I started to take myself and my health
for granted. For example, I wasn't watching what I was eating,
or eating on a regular schedule. I was also not getting enough
sleep. Most nights after I put the kids to bed I would go to
work on my computer.
All of my life I have had a "sweet
tooth," but I started to rely on sugar as a way to boost
my energy level throughout the day. Soon, I was in a vicious
cycle of not getting enough sleep, using sugar, and not being
able to go to sleep, using sugar, etc. Finally, my body paid
the price. Last year (Christmas of 1997), I blacked out in a
restaurant. At first, I was embarrased, and thought that it was
due to the one drink that I had had. Instead, I found out that
I had abused my body to the point where I now had a blood sugar
problem. The sugary drink that I had choosen (a frozen strawberry
daquiri), combined with an empty stomache, had caused my blood
sugar to drop to a point where I passed out.
Being diagnosed with hypoglycemia
(low blood sugar) was the wake up call that I needed to change
my lifestyle. I now no longer take my health and well-being for
granted. I try to make sure I have six mini healthful meals a
day, get at least 6 hours of sleep a night, take a multivitamin,
and exercise to cope with the stress of my life.
Although I sometimes "fall
off the wagon" and reach for sugar when I know I shouldn't,
I am doing a much better job of making myself a priority. Let's
face it -- with my lifestyle, I can't afford to
be sick!
