How I Simplified
My Life by Becoming an EP
Today I am a full-time freelance writer,
working from my home office. Less than one year ago, I was the
Director of Instructional Technology for a K-12 school district.
I walked away from a high-stress/ high-paying/ high profile job
to save myself, my health, my sanity and my family. As a result
of this stessful job, I wasn't sleeping, I was clinically depressed,
I was developing signs of OCD, and my two teens and my husband
were the target of much of my frustration.
At my physician's urging, I first
used up sick leave and available vacation time. (I also began
taking Prozac.) After nearly three weeks off, I decompressed
just enough to be able to take my doctor's advice, to the point
where I felt unable to return and subject myself to that pressure
again. Instead of completing the remaining four months in my
contract, I resigned. She urged me to quit while I still had
symptoms that could be treated. She cautioned me that more serious
health problems were sure to follow if I stayed at this job.
Since that time I have become
a successfully self-employed freelance writer, working from my
home office. Samples of my published works can be viewed online
at http://www.iserv.net/~kimmarie
Nearly all of my writing is as
a telecommuter. I now plan my "work" around my life
and family, instead of the other way around. I can assure you
that my spouse and two teenage children like this peson MUCH
better, even though it has required some adjustment and lifestyle
changes for everyone. I am the education columnist for Family
Software Magazine and the online issues columnist for Parenting
Today's Teen.
In closing, I'd like to quote
Author Katharine Patterson, who said, "As I look back on
what I have written, I can see the very persons who have taken
away my time are those who have given me something to say."
