Home Career Highlights
Home Biz: Parent to Parent -- Jodie Lynn now lives in St. Louis, Missouri with her family. She is a parenting and fitness educator. Her column, Parent to Parent, is syndicated nationally. Her latest book is "Mommy - CEO (Constantly Evaluating Others): 5 Golden Rules."

Mission:
Through my parenting column, Parent to Parent, my books, speaking engagements and other writings, I am trying to make a difference in today's society for children and their parents: If you care -- you will share! :)

Mission Accomplished:
  • "I love your column and look forward to reading it every week. It's not wisdom just for adults and not even just for parents. Thank you!" (Zora Amers, 17-years-old)
  • "An excellent, practical book -- a must-read for parents. Kudos to her for her hard work!" (Dr. Keith H. Dewey, Vanderbilt University).
  • "Sometimes, I can't stop laughing at her 'little' evaluations -- but must go on and learn more and more!" (Dottie Mack, mother, grandmother, author and nationally recognized poetry writer.)
  • "This book is not just for parents. The 5 Golden Rules apply towards challenges in today's world within all areas and for all folks! It's a definite winner!" (R. D. Wilson, high school English teacher, professional speaker and father of four.)
  • On April 17, 2000 -- Knight-Ridder Tribune News Service syndicated five columnists. I was one of the five and the only parenting columnist to ever be offered syndication. WOW -- it still hasn't hit me yet! Being dubbed in the media as the next "Erma Bombeck and Dear Abby" of parenting for the next millennium, is certainly a huge pair of shoes to fill. With a new book due out this fall, I will try to do my best for the public and meet those expectations.

Home Career Defining Moment: Recently, I heard on a news program that children of parents who work at home can grow up to be more independent, caring and respectful of others. These children can better grasp the true meaning of the real world due to the daily amount of exposure in rewards, as well as the pitfalls, of their parents. It provides an enviornment to better understand goals while getting a healthy dose of what discipline and hard work ethics are all about. When I heard this, I said, "Yes!" :)

Home Career Goal:
  • Professional Goal #1. My goals for the upcoming year would be that I don't "over schedule" my time where I end up placing my own family on the back burner.
  • Professional Goal #2. To try and continue to write at least one book each year for the next six years.
  • Professional Goal #3. To continue to strive to give parents all over America a platform (and a well deserved pat-on-the-back!) within my parenting column, Parent to Parent.

A Voice of Experience

EP Motivating Force:
To be more available for my children and their activities. It gives me the time to know what they are doing, where they are going and with whom they are doing it with. :)

EP Musings:
The most memorable moment in juggling working at home with children underfoot was when my youngest answered the phone and I heard him say, "Yes, my mom is here, but she's using the potty right now!"

EP Advice:
Don't try to work while the kids are determined to get your attention. Put things aside and spend a little time with them. Put yourself in their place. Computers are hot competition. They will probably leave you alone for a longer period if you'll spend time with them now. (Besides, you can enjoy the break as well!)

Depending on if you have younger or older children, don't get so uptight and involved in your work that you forget what your real job is: PARENTING! Pace yourself and take mini breaks. Try to eat right and exercise! If you have a major project to get out and fast food is the only answer, always eat a piece of fruit before or after to break down and help absorb the fats. Keep music handy and change it after a couple of hours. Get your body out of your chair and do a little dancing! Don't become too serious too fast. AND, NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF PRAYER! :)
